A rapid-acting insulin analog: two amino acids replaced so it acts sooner than human insulin. Used without diabetes to push nutrients into muscle, it is among the most dangerous drugs in bodybuilding.

What it gives

What people use it for and what the sources report. Strength is a general category from the literature: mild, clear or strong.

Purpose

Medically: mealtime insulin for diabetes. Bodybuilders use it for glycogen 'fullness' and anabolic signaling, almost always with steroids, often with GH; gains are partly glycogen, water and fat. It starts and wears off sooner than human insulin. There is no safe way to use it without diabetes.

What people seek and what studies show

People hope for fuller muscles, faster refueling after training and extra size. In human infusion studies insulin mainly slowed muscle protein breakdown; no controlled study shows added muscle or performance in healthy athletes. In an online survey of 41 non-diabetic insulin users from gym and bodybuilding forums, 57% reported hypoglycemia and one lost consciousness.

Possible side effects

With an extreme-risk substance some of these can be life-threatening or permanent; no dose, test or early sign makes it safe. Below — what each risk looks like; the signs that need urgent help are in block 04.

4 possible side effects

level · how often it is reported
High
Dangerous low blood sugar
Acts faster than human insulin, and training deepens the drop: seizures, coma, brain damage, death. No measure makes use without diabetes safe.
How to notice: Shaking, sweating, sudden hunger, confusion; higher risk during and for hours after exercise, also at night (type 1 diabetes data).
common
Elevated
Fast heart rate / arrhythmia
Like all insulins it drives potassium into cells; the label warns low potassium can cause fatal arrhythmia, more likely with diuretics or clenbuterol.
How to notice: Racing heart or skipped beats at rest or in training, shaky hands.
rare
Low
Water retention / bloating
Causes sodium and water retention (insulin edema): a bloated look and extra scale weight, which matters in weight-class sports.
How to notice: Puffy face and ankles, softer look, quick weight jumps.
possible
Low
Injection pain, infection, oil cough
Fatty lumps or skin amyloid deposits can form where it is injected; absorption becomes erratic, and lows become less predictable.
How to notice: Soreness, lumps; a short coughing fit right after an injection.
possible

How to lower the risks

Extreme risk

Extreme risk. No measure makes using this substance for sport safe: severe, including life-threatening, consequences are possible. The only reliable way to avoid these risks is not to use it.

If a doctor prescribed this medicine to treat you, do not stop taking it on your own — discuss it with your doctor.

Warning signs that need urgent help are listed in block 04.

Check-ups and blood tests

For an extreme-risk substance there is no testing schedule.

No testing schedule makes this substance safe, so there is no plan of tests here. If it has already been taken, watch for the urgent warning signs on this page and see a doctor — tell them exactly what was taken.

Get medical help at once if

  • Shaking, cold sweat, sudden hunger, confusion — stop exercising, fast sugar at once; very drowsy, unable to swallow or unconscious — nothing by mouth, call your local emergency number, glucagon if prescribed. Night sweats or nightmares after a training day can mean lows in sleep.
  • Racing or irregular heartbeat that does not settle at rest, dizziness, fainting (especially during exercise), chest pain — call your local emergency number.

In an emergency, call your local emergency number.

Myth & fact

Myth

“Rapid-acting insulin wears off sooner, so it is the safer choice.”

Fact

It also starts acting sooner, so a low can arrive faster. The label warns severe hypoglycemia can cause seizures and death; no eating plan makes it safe.
