Beta-alanine

CarnoSyn

Forms: Standard powder or capsules and sustained-release tablets (less tingling); a common pre-workout ingredient.

SupplementsOver the counter (varies by country)Evidence: limited human data

An amino acid that raises muscle carnosine, a buffer against the acid build-up of intense exercise. Effects build over weeks of regular use, not from a single serving.

What it gives

What people use it for and what the sources report. Strength is a general category from the literature: mild, clear or strong.

Purpose

Used to extend hard efforts lasting about 1–4 minutes (rowing, middle-distance, high-rep sets, combat sports) by delaying muscular fatigue. Little effect on maximal strength or long endurance.

What people seek and what studies show

A meta-analysis of 40 placebo-controlled trials (1,461 people) found a small overall benefit. It was clearest in tests to exhaustion lasting 30 seconds to 10 minutes; in timed races the effect was smaller and uncertain. Training status did not change the effect. Evidence on strength and on efforts beyond 25 minutes is limited. In a review of 101 human studies, tingling was the only reported side effect.

Possible side effects

Possible does not mean certain: whether they appear depends on dose, duration, individual response and monitoring. Below — what to watch for and how to notice it early.

2 possible side effects

level · how often it is reported
Low
Numbness, tingling, carpal tunnel
Harmless paresthesia: tingling of the face, neck and hands soon after intake that fades within 60–90 minutes; milder with sustained-release forms.
How to notice: Numb or tingling fingers, especially at night.
common
Low
Black-market quality risk (fakes, contamination)
Low risk as a single ingredient, but pre-workout blends vary in quality; choose third-party-tested products (Informed Sport, NSF).
How to notice: Unexpected effects, pain or infection, a stronger or weaker effect than expected.
rare

How to lower the risks

For 1 of 2 possible side effects there are specific ways to lower the chance: everyday measures, supplements and options a doctor may consider. For the rest — general advice. No measure removes a risk completely.

Low-level side effects

Numbness
See a doctor: numbness from GH-type drugs often eases after stopping; other causes need tests — vitamin B12 on metformin, copper with long-term high-dose zinc.
Measure
Working with a doctor
How each option helps (1)
  • Working with a doctor — Finds treatable causes of numbness early: low vitamin B12 on metformin, copper deficiency from excess zinc, nerve compression from GH-driven swelling.
Product quality
Products obtained without a prescription are often fake, mislabeled or non-sterile, and there is no way to check at home. For legal supplements, look for third-party testing (Informed Sport, NSF).

Check-ups and blood tests

Myth & fact

Myth

“Does the tingling mean it is working?”

Fact

No. Tingling is a harmless nerve response to a quick rise in blood levels; the benefit comes from carnosine building up in muscle over weeks.

Combinations

No specific combination notes for this substance yet. The stack check still adds up side effects that several substances share.
