Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA)
Ursodiol, Ursofalk, Ursosan, Urso Forte, Actigall
Forms: Capsules, tablets and oral suspension. TUDCA, sold as a supplement, is its taurine-bound form and has its own card.
A natural, water-soluble bile acid used as a medicine: it displaces more toxic bile acids and boosts bile flow. Prescription drug for gallstones and cholestatic liver disease.
Legal status: Usually a prescription medicine; status varies by country. Not on the WADA Prohibited List.
What it gives
What people use it for and what the sources report. Strength is a general category from the literature: mild, clear or strong.
Purpose
Hepatologists may add it as supportive care in cholestatic liver injury from oral 17α-alkylated steroids (jaundice, itch). Medical use: primary biliary cholangitis, dissolving some gallstones and preventing them during rapid weight loss in obesity.
What people seek and what studies show
In primary biliary cholangitis a 2-year placebo-controlled trial roughly halved treatment failure (23% vs 47%). In steroid liver injury there are only case reports: in a review of 52 cases it was one of several treatments, and in a systematic review only 2 of 6 steroid cases improved on it. International guidelines do not recommend it for drug-induced liver injury.

Possible side effects
Possible does not mean certain: whether they appear depends on dose, duration, individual response and monitoring. Below — what to watch for and how to notice it early.

How to lower the risks
For 2 of 2 possible side effects there are specific ways to lower the chance: everyday measures, supplements and options a doctor may consider. No measure removes a risk completely.
Low-level side effects
How each option helps (2)
- Working with a doctor — Assesses persistent vomiting or severe belly pain (possible pancreatitis or gallstones) and adjusts prescribed GLP-1 treatment when nausea persists.
- Pancreatin + dimeticone (Pankreoflat) — May ease heaviness and gas after meals; can cause nausea or diarrhea. Not for pork or cow's milk protein allergy (anaphylaxis reported) or early acute pancreatitis.
How each option helps (1)
- Minoxidil (topical) — Slows thinning and regrows some hair; scalp itching and early temporary shedding are common, unwanted facial hair possible. Gains fade once stopped.
Check-ups and blood tests
Which tests and check-ups to do and when. This is a guide — agree the exact schedule with your doctor.
For women
Published data, mostly from later pregnancy, have not shown a risk of birth defects; it is naturally present in breast milk. In pregnancy, only under a doctor.
Myth & fact
“Ursosan alongside oral steroids keeps the liver safe.”
No. There are no prevention trials in steroid users, guidelines do not recommend it for drug-induced liver injury, and in reported steroid cases it often failed. Jaundice or itching need a doctor.
